IPhone XI first pictures: are Apple designers on the wrong track?

IPhone XI first pictures: are Apple designers on the wrong track?

A set of renders allegedly showing what this rumoured "iPhone XI" will look like were obtained by tech site Digit. The flash, cameras and mic are placed in a staggered design, which looks outright disgusting (I say this now, but if it's true, I'm buying one without question #isheepgamestrong). The three lenses, flash, and microphone are placed inside a square, similar to Huawei's Mate 20 Pro, though the lens arrangement is different to its rival's handset, and the array is placed in the upper corner rather than in the center of the phone.

OnLeaks has shared a render that gives us our very first look at Apple's next smartphone - the iPhone XI 2019.

That notwithstanding, it's worth noting that the design above - if at all accurate - will likely be an exclusive on Apple's top of the line iPhone, with Digit noting: "Not knowing the scale at which the image was rendered, it is hard to say which variant will sport the three cameras".

It also remains to be seen if a third camera will be Apple's ticket to bounce back from a low 2018. There's also an LED flash above the side camera.

Earlier leaks have pointed out that there will be three iPhones this year, and we might be looking at the top-end variant in the freshly leaked render, which only shows the rear design of the phone. However, the triple camera setup on the back has attracted the most attention with its unconventional and un-Apple like asymmetrical layout.

A recent Bloomberg story mentioned that Apple is interested in Sony's new ToF sensors.

Apple's 2019 iPhone models are said to still be in the Engineering Validation Test (EVT) stage which is a step below the Design Validation Test (DVT) phase.

Some previous rumors suggest that the third camera will be a 3D ToF sensor, but it's still all speculations for now. Time-of-flight (ToF) technology is a new way to gather detailed 3D information of an object. The third camera in the iPhone XI could be used to create 3D models and focus on the subject much faster. It will be called iPhone XI (iPhone 11).
