QB Jalen Hurts announces transfer from Alabama to OU

Earlier Wednesday, ESPN reported that while the Sooners pursued Alabama graduate transfer quarterback Jalen Hurts, Oklahoma was blocking Kendall from transferring to West Virginia.

Because Hurts is a graduate, he will not be forced to sit out a season and can play right away. Both quarterbacks were also transfers. During his two seasons as the starting quarterback, he won an SEC Offensive Player of the Year award as a true freshman and threw for a combined 4,861 yards and 40 touchdowns to augment his 1,809 rushing yards and 21 additional scores on the ground. "I'm wiser. I'm a better man", Hurts wrote. All of that paid off in the SEC Championship Game against Georgia, in the same building and against the same opponent that his job was lost a year before. Hurts, given OU's quarterback-friendly system, would definitely have to be considered a Heisman hopeful in 2019.

The Sooner football program has found a winning formula in welcoming in quarterback transfers, arguably the most important position on the field, and the common denominator in that approach, insofar as Oklahoma football is concerned, is Riley. If he didn't think Kendall was the guy, then why on earth would he feel as if he should block his transfer?

Could there be some bad blood between Jalen Hurts and Alabama?

Because Hurts is eligible to play immediately, he doesn't have the additional year to get acclimated both Mayfield and Murray had when they transferred from Texas Tech and Texas A&M, respectively, as undergrads. To add to that already efficient career set of numbers, Hurts has almost 2,000 career rushing yards and 23 touchdowns.

Mayfield, of course, was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft and just completed an outstanding rookie season with the previously hapless Cleveland Browns. He finished his junior season 51 of 70 passing for 765 yards, including eight touchdowns and two interceptions.

Hurts led Alabama to national championship games in 2016 and 2017 and played a big role in the Crimson Tide's run this past season. Sure, but Oklahoma is a great spot for him. Neither Miami nor Maryland were going to contend for the national championship next year.
