Vic Fangio to be hired as the Broncos’ new head coach

The Bears thought enough of defensive coordinator Vic Fangio to grant him at least a courtesy interview for their head-coaching job after John Fox was dispatched.

Fangio signed a four-year contract, according to an ESPN report.

That's why Matt Nagy made a decision to keep Fangio on his staff when he took over as head coach in January of 2018, and his defense this past season was at their best.

Much as former Denver defensive coordinator Wade Phillips used to draw praise from players less than half his age, Fangio was greatly respected in the Bears' locker room.

According to Fangio's bio page on the Bears' website, he's spent 32 years in the NFL.

The team fired Vance Joseph last month at the conclusion of a 6-10 campaign that saw the Broncos miss the playoffs for the third straight year since winning Super Bowl 50.

From the time Pat Bowlen hired Mike Shanahan in 1995, the Broncos have had five head coaches.

With the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers arguable the two best teams in the AFC, the Broncos had to be both aggressive and bold.

In addition to Mack, who joined the Bears in a trade from Oakland, three other Bears defenders were selected to the Pro Bowl under Fangio's watch in 2018: safety Eddie Jackson, lineman Akiem Hicks and cornerback Kyle Fuller. The Bears finished with the league's top-ranked scoring defense, but were eliminated from the playoffs with a 16-15 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card round.

With the National Football League becoming an offensive showcase of fireworks and big plays, having a stout defense has almost become a lost art. It also seems likely that Fangio will call the defensive plays in at least his first year, with whomever he names as defensive coordinator getting the title in name only.

Fangio has never been a head coach at any level.

The Bears are slated to travel to Denver for a road matchup on their 2019 schedule.

This is a team that was built on defense last season.
