Abe mum on reports he nominated Trump for Nobel Peace Prize

Speaking at the White House Rose Garden on Friday, Trump claimed Abe had given him "the most lovely copy of a letter that he sent to the people who give out a thing called the Nobel Prize".

Trump's landmark June 2018 summit with Kim in Singapore was replete with pomp but thin on substance.

Abe ultimately submitted Trump's name, citing his efforts to defuse decades-long tensions on the Korean peninsula.

"You know why? Because he had rocket ships and he had missiles flying over Japan", Mr Trump said.

Kim Eui-kyeom, Mr Moon's spokesman, said he believed Mr Trump "has sufficient qualifications to win the Nobel Peace Prize" for his work toward peace between North and South Korea, which have yet to sign a peace treaty after their 1950-53 war.

Mr Abe added that Mr Trump had also passed on to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un Japan's own concerns about abductions of Japanese citizens by Pyongyang, saying "he and the entire White House also actively cooperated in resolving the issue". That's okay, ' he said.

"The Nobel Committee for the last 50 years has not disclosed who recommended and who was recommended".

The US president did not mention, however, that his administration had apparently requested the nomination from Abe.

"I highly praise President Trump's leadership", Mr. Abe said.

The Japanese Asahi Shimbun national newspaper reported Sunday that the US government had informally asked Abe to support Trump's nomination over his work to broker talks with North Korea. He was the first foreign leader to meet Mr. Trump after he won the 2016 presidential election.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

Trump has made strides in opening talks with North Korea, saying consistently that the hermit kingdom's belligerence should have been countered by his predecessors.

Trump complained Friday that Obama was there "for about 15 seconds" before he was awarded the prize.

A wide range of people can nominate for the Nobel Peace Prize, including members of parliaments and governments, heads of state, university professors of history, social sciences or law and past Nobel Peace Prize laureates, among others. He said, "Oh, what did I get it for?"' Where are we now?

"The nuclear, missile and abduction issues have not been resolved at all". But much more importantly than all of it - much more important, much, much more important than that - is we have a great relationship.

Later in September Trump told supporters he and Kim Jong-un "fell in love" during an exchange of letters. And I've done a job'.
