Dustin Johnson holds off Rory McIlroy to win WGC-Mexico Championship

Johnson rolled to a five-shot win over Rory McIlroy, shooting a five-under 66 to win the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship - his second win at the event in the past three years.

Two fancied players may have dominated throughout but both Mike Norman's pick, Paul Casey, and Paul Krishnamurty's fancy, Cameron Smith, placed for the each-way column and there was even better news for Paul when his 150/1 fancy, Kiradech Aphibarnrat, birdied the last three holes to grab a tie for third.

Tiger Woods carded a final-round 69 with three birdies to finish on eight under in joint 10th place.

Johnson becomes the 38th player in PGA Tour history with 20 victories.

The American, in his first competitive appearance south of the border, sent murmurs of disbelief through the packed gallery when he four-putted at the 15th hole at Club de Golf Chapultepec in Mexico City.

The 2018 victor was Phil Mickelson, who won the tournament after taking down Justin Thomas in a playoff. This is a big win for me. The only thing I can take away from this week is I really had good feel for hitting the ball pin high, which is really the only consolation for the week'.

"It means a lot to get 20 wins out here before the age of 35.

I hit it really well this week", Johnson said.

"It clicked. I hit it really well this week", Johnson said.

Johnson began the final 18 holes at 16 under and well clear of McIlroy. Woods played conservatively off the tee, but ranked seventh in strokes gained tee to green and first in strokes gained on approach to the green.

He was given free relief, carved a punch 6-iron under the tree limbs and two-putted from 50 feet for an unlikely par.

It will likely be another top-10 finish for the world No. 4, who blew a four-shot lead and finished second at last week's Genesis Open.

"Some weeks you play well, and someone just plays better". I just mis-judged the lie a little bit.

Johnson won for the 20th time on the PGA Tour, making him a lifetime member when he puts in 15 years on tour. Johnson holed from nine feet on the same hole and a pitch to four feet on the tenth handed him a six shot lead.

He added another three holes later, on the way to a round of 62.

He finished 10 shots adrift of victor Dustin Johnson, but the Thai said closing with three straight birdies was a real confidence booster. I knew Rory was going to be coming at me pretty good, I knew I had to have a good round if I wanted to win.

But it was the only way I could play the shot.

Woods finished T-10 for the event on a finishing score of eight-under, 13 shots behind eventual victor Dustin Johnson. Poulter has finished no worse than sixth in his four European Tour events so far this season and he carded a 68, making four birdies on the back nine after turning in 36.
