Exit from Brexit? I'd like it, but it's unlikely: German foreign minister

The Daily Mail quoted sources as saying that the plan aims to protect May from being ousted by MPs who want negotiations on Brexit's second stage related to a new trade deal.

It came after a report claimed that Nissan was preparing to scrap plans to build its X-Trail 4×4 at its Sunderland plant.

UK MPs last week backed a call for May to return to Brussels to secure a new Brexit deal that puts "alternative arrangements" in place of the controversial backstop - a kind of insurance policy created to avoid a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic.

The British Prime Minister says she will head to Brussels with fresh ideas to deliver Brexit.

With less than two months until Britain is due to leave the bloc on March 29, concerns are growing over the risk of a disorderly "no deal" exit.

The Tanaiste meanwhile, in an article in the Sunday Times insists there can be no withdrawal agreement without the backstop.

Warnings of the consequences of a no-deal Brexit intensified last week as several multinational firms, including Airbus and Ford, said jobs could suffer with an unfavourable negotiating outcome.

Britain is due to leave the European Union on March 29, with or without a Brexit deal.

She said she would be "battling for Britain" to ensure that there was no hard border in Ireland.

"The EU will not renegotiate the withdrawal agreement and there will be no withdrawal agreement without the backstop", he wrote, adding that the backstop was required to "ensure the protection of the Good Friday Agreement".

And speaking to Sophy Ridge on Sky News he also made a warning to the Irish government.

"That is what Parliament instructed me to do on Tuesday night".

Leo Varadkar, president of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker and European Council president Donald Tusk will meet on Wednesday for a number of Brexit-related meetings.

He said: "If they won't negotiate on it then they are likely to end up with no deal and the European Union said that's the best route to get a hard border".

"This represents a significant step towards delivering Brexit and fulfilling the instruction given to us by the British public".

Fox echoed comments by Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt on Thursday that a delay to the March 29 leaving date may be needed in order to get legislation through parliament.

The opposition Labour Party has said May needs to seek a customs union with the EU to win the support of its MPs, something opposed by many in her Conservative Party.
