Hanoi summit: Vietnam train station on lockdown ahead of Kim's arrival

The two leaders are due to meet in the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi, on Wednesday and Thursday, eight months after their historic summit in Singapore, the first between a sitting USA president and a North Korean leader.

At the June meeting, Kim pledged to "work towards complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula" but the lack of progress since then has drawn criticism that the leaders were only after headlines and short-term gains. The government has pushed the US and North Korean security services to work closely to prepare for the summit, a senior Vietnamese security official told Reuters.

But he appeared to play down any hope of a major breakthrough, saying he would be happy as long as North Korea maintained its pause on weapons testing.

"I'm not in a rush", Trump said.

" 'And I don't want my children to carry the nuclear weapon on their backs their whole life.' That was his answer", Mr Andrew Kim said at a lecture at Stanford University's Asia-Pacific Research Centre, where he is a visiting scholar.

"OK, I mean that's just a direct quote", Tapper said before moving on to a new line of questioning. "We now have a situation where the relationships are good - where there has been no nuclear testing, no missiles, no rockets".

While Biegun worked for decades as congressional staffer and as a White House foreign policy aide under President George W. Bush, his latest appointment was initially greeted with skepticism, given he was primarily a Russian Federation specialist with little exposure to the complex North Korea problem. Aides said he complained Mr. Pence had undermined diplomacy - which one European official said included near-agreement about imposing new sanctions on Iran's ballistic missile tests - and prompted fresh headlines about trans-Atlantic tensions.

-North Korea summit, "when asked whether he was willing to end his nuclear program".

The war ended with an armistice not a treaty, and North Korea is keen to sign a treaty, though the United States has demanded denuclearisation first.

The train's crossing into China follows days of speculation over Kim's travel plans ahead of the talks expected next Wednesday and Thursday.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Presidential Spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom addressed the possibility of a war-ending declaration without Seoul's participation.

But the key for Washington would be inspections by the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency to verify North Korea is getting rid of its nuclear weapons.

In June previous year in Singapore, the U.S. and North Korea released a four-point peace plan but there was little substance in the agreement.

But Chinoy noted that Trump had agreed to North Korean's "formulation of 'denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, ' which Pyongyang has long made clear meant an end to the USA security alliance with South Korea and an end to the US nuclear umbrella intended to defend South Korea and Japan".

Trump is scheduled to arrive in Vietnam on Tuesday evening, Vietnam's foreign ministry said.

And Vietnam, an economic powerhouse where the Communist Party still rules, is one of the few models available.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency said Kim's train had passed through a station in China's port city of Tianjin, southeast of Beijing, at around 1 p.m. (0500 GMT).
