Huawei's Mate X Is the Foldable Phone You Might Actually Want

Huawei's Mate X Is the Foldable Phone You Might Actually Want

A new four-minute video showcases the Galaxy Fold's features, including its hinge, and how apps like Google Maps switch from a large display to a traditional smartphone set-up when closed. The precise dimensions of the Galaxy Fold are not known yet, but it's safe to say that when folded it is thicker than the Mate X. Unfolding the screen, the Huawei Mate X blossoms into a tablet with an 8.0-inch, 2,480 x 2,200 pixels resolution OLED screen.

One other noticeable difference in the Huawei Mate X vs. Galaxy Fold comparison is how the cameras are housed. Both are 5G-capable. Huawei's is a bit pricier at $2,600 versus Samsung's $1,980 (although, no, neither is what you'd call affordable). So how did Huawei manage to upstage Samsung?

Let's face it we want our phones to be small. Why? The company only filed a patent for a smartphone with a flexible display in late 2017. But he cautioned that the prototype wasn't ready for the market yet.

Both phones are due for release in the coming months, with Huawei's pegged for the middle of the year and Samsung's earmarked for some time in Q2. They revealed the Galaxy Fold on stage in November of 2018... well, kinda.

Richard Yu, the chief executive of Huawei's consumer business, said the Mate X represented "a voyage into the uncharted". As Wired UK's Sophie Charara writes, "The first thing everyone does with the Mate X?"

"Since Samsung Display, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, is the only company that has the expertise and high yields to produce in-folding displays, no other company will be able to launch in-folding foldable devices for a while", the official said. Samsung is the only company with a firm release date, though: April 26th.

Many pundits simply think Huawei's design is superior.

At the Unpacked event in San Francisco last week, South Korean chaebol Samsung introduced its latest flagship Galaxy S10 series smartphones.

Many standard smartphone features are included on the device, including a fingerprint scanner, but it also boasts six cameras in total - three on the rear, two on the inside and one on the front of the device.

By comparison, the Fold's main screen is 7.3 inches when unfolded, with a 4.6-inch secondary screen, and the Fold measures 17mm at its thickest point when shut.

The Western Digital 1TB microSD card won't be much use for your current phone (plus, it's very expensive) but it does mark a major innovation for the phone market and a step forward to bringing even more storage to your phone.

Closing the Mate X requires a degree of force, in that the Falcon Hinge is mechanical and doesn't flop about.
