'Captain Marvel' review: As Brie Larson dazzles, Marvel's future is definitely female

The latest Marvel installment starring Brie Larson is on track to bring in anywhere from $120 to $150 million dollars this opening weekend. There's a glimpse of Annette Bening holding a gun.

This either implies Nebula betrayed Stark and got back to the Avengers (which doesn't fit given that she left her evil ways behind) or someone came to rescue Stark but could only save one.

Captain Marvel, the 21st film in the seemingly endless Marvel Cinematic Universe, is now in theaters.

The supporting cast offers some of the film's most enjoyable surprises. Also, I thought her name was spelled "Rambo" until I saw it written out online. She challenges and supports Carol, especially when it comes to facing the hero's forgotten past. They and their conspicuous stunt doubles engage in a battle with punches and judo throws. Before Carol leaves, she tells Fury to keep this energy core on Earth. Through the years, she has joined the Avengers, worked with the X-Men, and teamed up with Alpha Flight and the Guardians of the Galaxy. Don't worry though, fans will still get to have their say: "Once a movie is released, audiences can leave a user rating and comments as they always have". This shapeshifting race is led by Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), a greenish goblin-looking guy with a mock Cockney accent. Any Kree soldier could be a Skrull in disguise.

"A boring and bland story focused on a character with neither personality nor a single weakness", says another post critical of the film.

The tone lightens temporarily when Vers's mission takes her crashing to Earth, straight into 1995 and through the roof of a Blockbuster video store, a source of cheap nostalgic laughs.

Because the movie is set in the '90s, Jackson had to be de-aged in the editing room to appear like a younger version of Nick Fury.

This ties up to The Avengers (2012) where already in possession of the Tesseract.

"Where's Fury?" Captain Marvel questions, as the scene cuts to black. Goose is a flerken who looks like a cat and her abilities include swallowing up humans. Wait, didn't James Bond wear that stunt out? Captain Marvel makes it perfectly clear that the Skrulls are actually anything but evil this time around-at least, not that we can see.

Released on International Women's Day, this superhero adventure is probably the first Marvel movie with a "nevertheless, she persisted" montage. But it ain't Larson or her character.

Goose is a flerken who looks like a cat. Helmers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck ("Half Nelson", "It's Kind of a Funny Story"), who co-wrote the script with Geneva Robertson-Dworet (the "Tomb Raider" reboot), manage the seemingly impossible task of creating a narrative that snaps into the interlocking arc of the MCU while standing on its own and flying in some interesting twists. Like Larson's, their voices are overwhelmed by Marvel's homogeneous style. How Did Captain Marvel Get Her Powers? Jackson and Larson have an easy, amusing back-and-forth byplay, and there are some grounded dramatic scenes with Vers's friend Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch).

This is the first Marvel movie centered on a woman.

One element does fulfil the film's female-empowerment hype. Before taking on the title Captain Marvel, Carol used several different aliases, including Binary, Warbird, and her original moniker, Ms. Marvel (currently being used by Kamala Khan).
