Cohen Hearing May Have Led to Breakdown in NK Talks, Trump Says

News of the apparent activity comes less than a week after a second summit between the US and North Korea ended in stalemate. Cohen is scheduled to begin a three-year term in prison for lying to Congress and financial fraud. He is a conman.

In a series of eight tweets, Waters lambasted Trump for his "fake summit" with "killer Kim Jong Un", Jamal Khashoggi's death, the firing of James Comey, Jared Kushner's security clearance and his repeated refrain of "no collusion".

The proposal for the talks came during a National Security Council meeting on Monday led by South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who said it was Seoul's "outmost priority" to prevent nuclear negotiations between the US and North Korea from derailing.

While North Korea's official media said last week Kim and Trump had decided at the summit to continue talks, its Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui told reporters Kim "might lose his willingness to pursue a deal" and questioned the need to continue.

"The President takes him (Kim) at his word", Mr Bolton told Tapper.

"I am not the national security decision-maker", Mr Bolton added later.

Bolton said the leaders left on good terms and that Trump made an important point to North Korea and other countries that negotiate with him.

Bolton's evocation of progress was dismissed by leading Democrats, however, including House Intelligence Committee chairman Adam Schiff, who described the Hanoi meeting as a "spectacular failure".

"The president is fully prepared to keep negotiating at lower levels or to speak to Kim Jong Un again when it's appropriate", he said.

After his summit with Mr. Trump, Mr. Kim had a two-day official visit to Vietnam that included a meeting with Vietnamese Nguyen Phu Trong and paying his respects at the embalmed body of national hero Ho Chi Minh.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Monday he was hopeful he would send a delegation to North Korea in the coming weeks but that he had "no commitment yet".

Moon lauded both sides for having talked about the complete demolition of North's Yongbyon nuclear facility under the observation of American experts, saying the scrapping of Yongbyon would mark an "irreversible" step in North Korean denuclearization.

Trump has repeatedly complained about the cost of the exercises and - since 2017's Singapore summit - the Washington and Seoul have scaled back or scrapped several joint exercises. The two projects, which are just above the inter-Korean border, were shut down by the past two conservative administrations of South Korea.
