Messi, in contrast, followed up his outstanding performance by praising Ronaldo.

Lionel Messi inspired Barcelona to the Champions League quarter-finals with two goals and two assists in their 5-1 victory over Lyon at the Nou Camp on Wednesday evening.

Mane's second goal against the Germans was his seventh away from home in the Champions League and took him past the previous high of six, shared by Gerrard and Robert Firminho.

"Cristiano and Juventus were awesome".

"I think he had a great game".

One of those is in Dutch giants AFC Ajax going up to face Serie A champions Juventus - with many looking at the clash between Cristiano Ronaldo and Frenkie De Jong.

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has blasted VAR by insisting the technology was not used successfully in their Champions League defeat at Barcelona.

That was not before Barca had scored a second as the faultless Arthur Melo played an angled pass into Suarez, who wriggled clear. This was a relatively comfortable affair as the team put in a top display overall especially in the first half, but Messi delivered the magic when they needed to pull away from a fearless, exciting Lyon side.

He then gives the toddler the ball - much to her delight - as she runs off gleefully in the opposite direction. He helped Real win four of the past five Champions Leagues and it is hard to imagine the Spanish giants winning any of them without the Portuguese star's contribution.

The first legs of the quarter-final ties will take place on 9 and 10 April, with the return dates being held a week later.

"We don't want to choose one [side] because they're all really tough", Messi said. "The team has been consistent in all the competitions but the Champions League is decided by fine margins".

The quarterfinal draw is on Friday. Messi has won it four times, Ronaldo five. They met again in 2011 semifinals, when Messi scored twice to help Barcelona eliminate Real Madrid. Liverpool has a lot of firepower like it showed against Bayern (Munich). "We must wait calmly to see who we will play and prepare for the hardest thing that is coming now".
