PNB scam: Nirav Modi living in luxury flat in London, running business

The CBI is awaiting a response on its extradition request which was sent to the United Kingdom through the External Affairs Ministry in August previous year after the confirmation from London that Mr. Modi was in their country, agency spokesperson Nitin Wakankar said. Nirav Modi is on run as he is wanted by agencies in India in Rs 13,000 fraud case. Jewellery firms headed by him and his uncle, Mehul Choksi, are accused of cheating Punjab National Bank by raising foreign credit using fake guarantees.

Nirav Modi reportedly takes a daily walk from his home to the office with his dog, he is not easily recognisable due to his changed looks.

The Congress tweeted on Saturday after the video of Modi was released, asking why the government was unable to "track down Nirav Modi" when journalists had managed to do so.

His response comes hours after the news of fugitive billionaire diamantaire Nirav Modi, accused in the $2 billion PNB fraud case, living openly in a swanky 8-million pound apartment in London's West End was reported by The Telegraph.

A request for the extradition of Nirav Modi to India was sent in July 2018.

"It is right Modiji (Narendra Modi), first rob Rs 23,000 crore from the banks; escape the country without any problem and then ridicule the investigative agencies like the CBI and the ED".

"Since last 5 years, he (Modi) is making two Indias - one is of wealthy people like Anil Ambani who travel in private planes and achieve what they like".

The daily said it had tracked him down to a three-bedroom apartment, which occupies half of a floor at the landmark Centre Point tower block, in London's West End.

Modi, 48, is now living in a three-bedroom flat occupying half of a floor of the landmark Centre Point tower block, where rent is estimated to cost 17,000 pounds a month, as per the British Daily report. "The business, which was incorporated last May, is linked to his flat in Centre Point although he is not listed as a director at Companies House", the report said. Nirav Modi has also got UK's Nation Insurance Number, which is normally provided to United Kingdom nationals only and allows people to do business, carry out bank transactions, etc, legally. He is also seen avoiding every question posed at him, saying "no comment". The newspaper reported that he was wearing a jacket that was made of ostrich hide, which would have cost at least 10,000 British pounds.
